It is very important that each student that is involved in an educational institution should have an equal opportunity to learn. Going through school students should also learn a bit about themselves and how they learn so they have the advantage to utilize their skills in the learning process. Students should also have some kind of idea of what career paths are a good fit for them as well. The education system implement and teach the learning style and multiple intelligence in the classroom because this will give every student a chance to learn, help the students understand the way they learn the easiest, and teach the students what careers are a match for them.
The definition of learning styles that is found at Wikipedia’s website is, “Learning styles are various approaches or ways of learning. They involve educating methods, particular to an individual, which are presumed to allow that individual to learn best. Most people prefer an identifiable method of interacting with, taking in, and processing stimuli or information. Based on this concept, the idea of individualized "learning styles" originated in the 1970s, and acquired "enormous popularity". The three different kinds of learning styles are visual learners, auditory learners, and kinesthetic or tactical learners.
There are seven types of multiple intelligences. You can find the following information at this website, http://www.ldpride.net/learningstyles.MI.htm. This is a list of what they are, the skills that go with each one and what possible career paths each type matches up with:
• Visual/Spatial Intelligence
ability to perceive the visual. These learners tend to think in pictures and need to create vivid mental images to retain information. They enjoy looking at maps, charts, pictures, videos, and movies.
Their skills include:
puzzle building, reading, writing, understanding charts and graphs, a good sense of direction, sketching, painting, creating visual metaphors and analogies (perhaps through the visual arts), manipulating images, constructing, fixing, designing practical objects, interpreting visual images.
Possible career interests:
navigators, sculptors, visual artists, inventors, architects, interior designers, mechanics, engineers
• Verbal/Linguistic Intelligence
ability to use words and language. These learners have highly developed auditory skills and are generally elegant speakers. They think in words rather than pictures.
Their skills include:
listening, speaking, writing, storytelling, explaining, teaching, using humor, understanding the syntax and meaning of words, remembering information, convincing someone of their point of view, analyzing language usage.
Possible career interests:
Poet, journalist, writer, teacher, lawyer, politician, translator
• Logical/Mathematical Intelligence
ability to use reason, logic and numbers. These learners think conceptually in logical and numerical patterns making connections between pieces of information. Always curious about the world around them, these learner ask lots of questions and like to do experiments.
Their skills include:
problem solving, classifying and categorizing information, working with abstract concepts to figure out the relationship of each to the other, handling long chains of reason to make local progressions, doing controlled experiments, questioning and wondering about natural events, performing complex mathematical calculations, working with geometric shapes
Possible career paths:
Scientists, engineers, computer programmers, researchers, accountants, mathematicians
• Bodily/Kinesthetic Intelligence
ability to control body movements and handle objects skillfully. These learners express themselves through movement. They have a good sense of balance and eye-hand co-ordination. (e.g. ball play, balancing beams). Through interacting with the space around them, they are able to remember and process information.
Their skills include:
dancing, physical co-ordination, sports, hands on experimentation, using body language, crafts, acting, miming, using their hands to create or build, expressing emotions through the body

Athletes, physical education teachers, dancers, actors, firefighters, artisans
• Musical/Rhythmic Intelligence
ability to produce and appreciate music. These musically inclined learners think in sounds, rhythms and patterns. They immediately respond to music either appreciating or criticizing what they hear. Many of these learners are extremely sensitive to environmental sounds (e.g. crickets, bells, dripping taps).
Their skills include:
singing, whistling, playing musical instruments, recognizing tonal patterns, composing music, remembering melodies, understanding the structure and rhythm of music
Possible career paths:
Musician, disc jockey, singer, composer
• Interpersonal Intelligence
ability to relate and understand others. These learners try to see things from other people's point of view in order to understand how they think and feel. They often have an uncanny ability to sense feelings, intentions and motivations. They are great organizers, although they sometimes resort to manipulation. Generally they try to maintain peace in group settings and encourage co-operation. They use both verbal (e.g. speaking) and non-verbal language (e.g. eye contact, body language) to open communication channels with others.
Their skills include:
seeing things from other perspectives (dual-perspective), listening, using empathy, understanding other people's moods and feelings, counseling, co-operating with groups, noticing people's moods, motivations and intentions, communicating both verbally and non-verbally, building trust, peaceful conflict resolution, establishing positive relations with other people.
Possible Career Paths:
Counselor, salesperson, politician, business person
• Intrapersonal Intelligence
ability to self-reflect and be aware of one's inner state of being. These learners try to understand their inner feelings, dreams, relationships with others, and strengths and weaknesses.
Their Skills include:
Recognizing their own strengths and weaknesses, reflecting and analyzing themselves, awareness of their inner feelings, desires and dreams, evaluating their thinking patterns, reasoning with themselves, understanding their role in relationship to others
Possible Career Paths:
Researchers, theorists, philosophers
It is very crucial to every person’s upbringing that they each learn as much as they can in school. The only way that the education system can do a good job of this is to reach each and every student by incorporating the three different learning styles into their schools curriculum. In the movie “Dead Poets Society” you see Mr. Keaton use all three learning styles in his teaching all throughout the movie. Malcom X was definitely a visual learner. The way he talks about how he could not put down a book once he learned how to read proves that. In Mike Roses Part 2 readings when he is talking about his Biology teacher he gives you a good idea of a teacher who does incorporate all the learning styles into their teaching. Since every person has their own way of learning the education system worldwide needs to open their eyes to this and make adjustments to their curriculum to give each student a fair chance to learn.
It is not only important to incorporate the different learning styles in the classroom, it is also important for the students to be taught about them as well. This is important because each student learns in their own way and if the schools taught the students this, they could utilize their specific skills to enhance their learning. There are several tests that can be given to students to help them understand their specific learning styles. Teachers can simply Google learning styles test and get about three million seven hundred and eighty thousand results in zero point eleven seconds. The education system needs to start teaching this information to students early on in their education. It could be very beneficial as far as research goes to test students periodically throughout their education so they can really see how the students develop as they grow. It says online that the different learning styles were discovered in the seventies, yet forty years later we do not really see this kind of education in our pre college school systems.
Every student should also get a chance to learn about multiple intelligences, this will help the student have a better understanding of who they are and what career paths would be a good match for them. This kind of education can give students an advantage of getting ready for college and/or their careers early on in their education, when the brain is gathering the most information in life and developing the most. Teachers can Google multiple intelligence test and only get about three million, three hundred and eighty thousand results in zero point zero six seconds. There is no reason this information is not being taught in the classrooms at an early age and all the way up through ones education. Again by doing this it will not only help the students it can help researchers get a better understanding of how people develop and grow. The whole idea of education is to help prepare us for going out in the world, starting a career and building a family. If students are taught about multiple intelligences and get a better understanding of whom they are and why they are the way they are. They will have a better idea of what direction they want to take in life in college or after school. When you are growing up it can be a very confusing time in life. Especially when it comes to trying to figure out what college or career path you want to take. A lot of the time a person gets into college, spends a year or two studying one thing before they realize that what they are studying for is really not a match for them after all. People also tend to go from one job to another trying to find the right match for them. Teaching this information in the classroom can help prevent a lot of that confusion and indecisiveness.
The education system throughout the world is responsible for a good portion of every child and adults readiness for life. Seeing how education plays such a crucial role in each and every person’s life. It is very important that the education systems throughout the world make a point of utilizing the advancements in technology and research to better our children’s education. There are enough roadblocks and hurdles that children have to overcome throughout their childhood. The education system needs to be more aware of the difference in people and the importance of each individual’s education. It is unfortunate that so many “underachievers” for say just slip through the cracks because so many school systems do not have or take the time to make sure each student is getting a chance to learn. Not to mention most schools are more concerned about their ratings than they are concerned with the student’s upbringing. If the education systems incorporated more of this information into their curriculum it could really make a difference in the next generations of students and their outcome in life. Who knows it could change a whole lot of things in this world.

Comment on Michelle's Thesis-Driven Essay Paper 3 - Thesis Statement
I cant agree with you more about teachers having too many students in one class. I don't really agree with it being a problem as far as teachers getting burnt out. If you can't handle the job than you shouldn't do it. There is someone else out there that can handle the job and love doing at the same time. However, it is a shame that due to over crowded classes the students these days don't get the individual attention that they need to excel.

Comment on Jeremy's Mike Rose Part 2
Good observations in Mike's writing. I kind of had a hard time following what he was trying to say. He is obviously educated and uses a lot of extended vocabulary that you do not hear everyday. I did enjoy his story it was just a little hard to follow.
Comment on Jim's Mike Rose Part 2
No I don't think he really was looking forward to those next four years. I do think he was quite proud of his achievements, which gave him the drive to continue after high school. Not to mention his favorite teacher believed in him and pulled strings in order for him to continue on and I imagine that also gave him the drive to go on.
Mike Rose Part 2
In Mike Roses writing he mentions several teachers. He only goes into detail for two out of the several teachers he mentions. These teachers must have been great teachers because they obviously made a mark in his life. I found it quite interesting how he described his Biology teacher and the different forms of learning he experienced with that teacher. By different learning experiences I am talking about the different forms of teaching the Biology Teacher used in his classroom. Mike talks about how he uses transparent pages for bone layout, model skeleton, hands on projects, lectures, and reading. Each of these teaching styles are different forms of learning. Each person is different and we each take to one or two learning styles for the most part. I feel when a teacher uses several different styles of learning it shows me they care about teaching and want to make a mark in as many of their students lives as they can. This to me is a great teacher.

Unit III: Critiquing Education: What's it All About?
1. What did Mr. Escalante think education should do?
I feel that Mr. Escalante wanted to use his knowledge to make a difference in his students life. I feel he did whatever it took to gain the respect of his students. This allowed him the opportunity to plant his seeds and watch them blossom just like each and everyone of his students did.
2. What did Mr. Escalante's colleagues (other teachers and administrators) think education should do?
I feel Mr. Escalante's colleagues had little or no passion for teaching. I feel that most of them had given up on the students and themselves. They did not show any sign of wanting to make a difference until after Mr. Escalante already had made a difference.
3. What did Mr. Keating think education should do?
Mr. Keating wanted to plant his seeds and watch them blossom just like Mr. Escalante. He was just growing a different kind of flower in much different conditions. Mr. Keating wanted his students to learn how to step out of their bubble that they had been forced to remain in for so long. Again he wanted to make a difference in his students lives.

Mr. Keatings colleagues were very set in their beliefs of what teaching should be. They did not believe the students were able to think for themselves. I feel they were basically brainwashing the students into being what the parents were paying big money for the children to be. I feel this is very wrong in a lot of ways. Don't get me wrong every child needs direction and structure to blossom. However, I feel each person deserves the right to be who they are it is our lives nobody elses.

I have had a lot of great teachers in my life. Some of them have been strict and some of them have been super lenient. I feel the biggest thing eachy and everyone of them had a passion to teach and make a difference in their students lives.

To be honest I can't say that I can remember ever having a bad teacher. But I think a bad teacher would be a teacher that did not care about each and everyone of their students in one way or another. I feel a bad teacher would be someone that was teaching for a paycheck and not to make a difference in their students lives. I would have to say being a teacher is a bigger responsibility than most people want to recognize. When you are teaching something to someone you are making a difference in that persons life whether it be big or small is irrelevant.

One Great Teacher
Fall quarter of 2010, I came to Olympic College as a student in the work first program, enrolled in the C.S.A.L.T. “College Skills and Life Training” class. In this class we had a different teacher Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. On Thursday we had an English teacher for the first half of the day and the second half we spent with the teacher I am writing this paper about. The second half of Thursday, I had Shiboan Fitz-Patrick as an instructor for our job skills class. Shiboan was an excellent teacher because she was very educated in her field, she cared about her students, and she always had a very cheerful and positive attitude.
I came into the class two weeks after the quarter had started and Shiboan immediately started helping me and the other students that came into the class at the same time. She quickly had us caught up with the rest of the class for the most part. Any question that anyone in the class asked she always had a very educated answer for and could elaborate if needed, to make sure we all understood. Here I was thirty four years old and had never made a resume before and was quite overwhelmed by the whole idea. Shiboan took it step by step explaining each step of creating a cover page and resume very thoroughly. She explained what employers are looking for in a resume and what will get it thrown out at first glance. She explained in specific details how to prepare for and present ourselves during an interview. Shiboan not only had a lot of information to give about Olympic College's hiring procedures and job market resources. She also knew a lot about job market resources and job opportunities in the community. I have learned quite a bit about job seeking in the past but I cannot say that I have ever came across anyone that was as educated as Shiboan was in her field of career services.
I looked forward to my Thursday afternoons with Shiboan. She was the only teacher that had us check- in every week. What I mean about check in is, Shiboan took the time in the beginning of her short class to hear how things had gone for us during the last week Or we could just say our name and career goal. That is how it started in the beginning just saying our name career goal. After a few weeks into the quarter the weekly check-in started to get quite personal for most of the class and Shiboan as well. I felt that she did this because she cared about her students.
It took me quite a long time after I moved to Bremerton from Seattle to get a bike. I would have to say that it was the longest amount of time I went without a bike since I learned how to ride one twenty five years ago. The thing is that in order for me to get this bike I had to go to Goodwill when they first opened up because the bike would have been sold before I got home from school. The bike went on sale for fifty percent off that morning. So, I went and bought the bike which made me late for school. Since I was already late I couldn’t take the bike home and then wait for the next bus. So I rode the bike to school without a lock of course, hoping it would be ok outside the portable for a few hours. Unfortunately, somebody made off with it in less than an hour. I noticed it was gone when I was heading in to Shiboan’s class, well when I got into the classroom she could tell something was wrong and I told her what happened and she told me to call security and report it. I was reluctant because I did not pay a whole lot for the bike, but she insisted. To make a long story short Olympic College Security never retrieved my bike. However, they gave me a bike that was never claimed in return because I had reported my bike and told them my story. I don’t feel this would have ever happened if it wasn’t for Shiboan and the caring person that she is.
Shiboan always came into the classroom with a huge smile on her face. This really set the tempo for the second half of our day. She really supported her students with her positive attitude. I asked her many questions regarding what I should do about my trespasses in life when I was creating my resume. She always had a very positive reply to quite a few not so positive subjects. There were times Shiboan had to pause during her teaching for disruptive talking in the class and she always handled these situations with a smile. I feel Shiboan is the kind of person that only wants to see the good in everything. This is a very unique trait for a person to have in the world these days; a lot of people look for the bad not the good. When I have a teacher with such a positive attitude I feel that I learn a lot more and it makes learning that much easier.
I achieved a lot in the small amount of time I had in Shiboans class. I really learned a lot of great job market skills that I can’t wait to put to use when I enter the job search after college. I am looking forward to work with Shiboan when I am ready to put together a final resume after school. I have had several instructors at this college that were also great teacher. I actually feel I have been blessed, I have not met one instructor yet that I have not enjoyed. However, I wrote this paper about Shiboan because she was such a unique instructor.
